Here is some insider knowledge that I’ve gained over my years of planning hundreds of family vacations not only for my own family but for clients as well!

Optimal Crowd Levels for VIP Comfort

You’ll enjoy lower wait times and a less “people-y” environment by visiting during off-peak dates for your enchanting adventure. Not only will this impact your wait times in a positive way but you’ll be more likely to find availability for VIP tours, premium dining reservations, and behind the scenes tours. Based on the data from the last few years, here are the best times to visit:

• Late January to Early February: As the holiday season ends, crowd levels dip significantly. This time frame will give you cooler weather, shorter lines, more dining reservation availability, and more choice of rooms at the best resorts! This window of time does mean that we need to keep an eye on the Run Disney races because those will drive up the crowd levels, but it’s a lovely time to visit for so many reasons!
• Early May: Late spring means that the Spring Break crowds are back in school and you get to enjoy Central Florida just before it the weather turns into its peak highs. Character meet-and-greets are more enjoyable with the thinner crowds and plentiful rooms at top-tier resorts.
• Mid-September to Early November: I always say “If everyone else is in school then they aren’t standing in front of you on vacation!” Back-to-school season is a great option for families traveling with littles who don’t attend school just yet not only for the often more mild temperatures but also because of the extras like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and other intimate holiday experiences. My biggest piece of advice for this time frame? Make sure you have travel insurance to protect the investment of your stay because this time frame has you traveling during hurricane season.

Weather Considerations for an Optimal Luxury Experience

Summer vacation makes sense for a lot of travelers’ vacation but have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a baked potato rolling around on the surface of the sun while it’s raining? Than you’ll love Orlando in the summer! Look, I live in south Texas so it’s not like the concept of a hot summer is foreign to me, but the heat , the humidity, and scattered showers? It’s not ideal. If you are really looking for a Disney experience during the summer months then I encourage you to check out Disneyland instead. You truly cannot go wrong with a southern California summer night!

Special Events and Seasonal Magic: Unique Disney Experiences

Disney’s seasonal events add an extra layer of magic and really allows you to tailor your stay around exclusive, immersive experiences.

• Halloween: With elaborate decorations, seasonal performances, and holiday-themed menus, Disney’s level of spooky is perfect for those that don’t enjoy the horror side of Halloween. If you find yourself in Florida on select nights August-October then you’ll love Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! Feeling more of a West Coast vibe? Then Oogie Boogie Bash will be calling your name! Both of these events will feature characters that are not often out and about for meet and greets, including your favorite villains!

• Christmas: Disney World hosts its annual Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party inside Magic Kingdom on select dates in November and December. Limited tickets are available for each party, so you’ll be able to make the very most of your party time! You can expect crowds to be at their tippy top the week of Thanksgiving and then dwarfed by the crowds the week between Christmas and New Years Day, so planning your visit around those is going to be essential. You won’t miss out on any of the holiday fun by traveling on a less crowded date!
• EPCOT Festivals: These themed events last weeks at a time and are an absolute dream! Whether it’s Festival of the Arts, Flower and Garden, or Food & Wine, you’ll enjoy exclusive themed menus, limited time merch, and activities for everyone in the family! It’s best to attend these during a weekday afternoon or evening if you’re looking to experience these festivals with smaller crowds.

Times to Avoid

While there isn’t really formula to pin pointing the busiest days, it really goes back to what I said earlier: If everyone else is in school, they aren’t at Disney World. The key though is not just taking the American schools into consideration, but around the world. Schools in Europe, Australia, South America, etc. have different breaks than we have here in the States and since Disney theme parks attract visitors from around the globe, you have to be sure to account for their breaks as well. Here is a break down of some time frames to avoid:

• January: The first few days after the New Year are going to be packed at both Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. You’ll also want to really think about how many people will be out of school for a long weekend for MLK Day in the middle of the month. The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend also tends to be scheduled in the middle of this month while the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend tends to be held the last weekend of the month.
• February: With Valentines Day and Presidents Day so close to each other on the calendar, it’s usually a pretty good bet that the parks will be filled with people looking to make their fairy tale come true with some Disney magic. This is also the rough time frame for the Disney Princess Half Marathon at Disney World.
• March/April: Spring Break is a very popular time for enchanting escapes on both coasts. While these crowds aren’t always bonkers, it’s going to be very people-y out there.

• July: The 4th of July brings an exclusive firework show to both Sleeping Beauty Castle and Cinderella Castle. If you’re feeling particularly patriotic, you won’t want to miss this patriotic event, but if you’re looking for an escape from the crowds, this isn’t going to be the ideal time for your getaway. This is also usually a very busy month for travelers from around the world as it tends to fall over many international winter breaks.
• October: Leaves may be falling but crowds sure aren’t! The middle of October brings families from far and wide as they enjoy their Fall Break.
• November: Thanksgiving in America is a very popular time for travel. Not only are the airports packed to the brim with people traveling home to see their loved ones, the parks are filled with people who aren’t too keen on cooking their own festive meal. This entire week and typically the Thursday and Friday before are going to be as busy as the grocery store the night before turkey day!December: From mid December through New Years Day is when you can expect the highest crowds all year, but especially December 25th through January 2nd. You can expect Magic Kingdom to reach capacity at least once during this time frame. Don’t hesitate to give the gift of a Disney vacation for the holidays, but consider a delayed departure to make the most of it.
