You want a family vacation filled with magic but aren’t sure if it should be mouse based or boy wizard fueled? Let’s find out together!
Choosing between Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando can be overwhelming. Both destinations offer a variety of resorts, experiences, and entertainment options but they cater to different tastes and preferences. Let’s explore what each destination has to offer.
Understanding Your Family’s Needs
Before diving into the specifics of each option, it’s essential to consider your family’s unique desires and needs. Are you seeking a magical, fairytale-like experience filled with beloved characters? Or do you crave thrilling adventures and immersive worlds? Perhaps a balance of both is ideal.
Consider the ages of your children, their interests, and your family’s overall pace. Do you prefer a leisurely vacation filled with relaxation and exploration, or are you looking for non-stop excitement and adventure? Answering these questions will help you determine which destination aligns best with your family’s needs.
Walt Disney World
Disney World is filled to the brim with enchantment and wonder. With four iconic theme parks—Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom—there’s something to captivate everyone. From classic characters and beloved stories to cutting-edge technology and immersive lands, Disney World delivers on every level!
Accommodations: Disney offers a wide range of on-site resorts, providing unparalleled convenience and themed experiences. You’ll want to consider the following when narrowing down your home away from home at Disney World:
Resort level: There are 3 levels of resorts- Value, Moderate, and Deluxe. Each of these offers unique amenities, theming, and location. The Value resorts are going to typically be located further away from the parks themselves, provide less transportation options, and generally bare bones necessities. A Deluxe resort is going to typically be located closer to the parks, offer multiple transportation options, and more feature more upscale decor and amenities. The Moderate resorts are a happy medium between Value and Deluxe and are sprinkled throughout the property.
There is technically a 4th category of resort at Disney World- Deluxe Villas. This category will show you available rooms at Disney Vacation Club properties. They don’t always have rooms for those that are not members of DVC but if you can snag one, you are going to have an amazing experience!
Dining: Indulge in a culinary journey with diverse dining options, from quick-service eateries to fine dining restaurants. Disney is renowned for its character dining experiences and themed restaurants! As a mom of a kid with food allergies, I love how accommodating the chefs at Disney World are with special dietary needs! Everything from nut and shellfish allergies to special religious needs, Disney World can accommodate it all!
Experiences: Immerse yourself in the magic with parades, fireworks, and character meet-and-greets. Explore enchanting lands, embark on thrilling attractions, and witness breathtaking shows. Disney World also offers a variety of water parks, golf courses, and shopping destinations.
While Disney World is undeniably magical, it’s important to consider the potential crowds, especially during peak seasons. The sheer size of the resort can also be overwhelming for some families. But fear not! I’m here to help you every step of the way.
Universal Studios Orlando: Thrills and Immersive Experiences
Universal Studios Orlando also offers blend of thrilling rides, immersive lands, and entertainment for all ages. With two theme parks—Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure—plus the water park Volcano Bay, there’s no shortage of excitement.
Accommodations: Universal offers on-site hotels that provide exclusive benefits, such as early park admission when you book your stay with me as well as complimentary Universal Express Pass Unlimited when you stay at a Premier resort. You’ll find everything from rock star themes to Minions and Jurassic Park themed rooms, so there really is something for everyone!
Dining: Savor delicious food and drinks at themed restaurants and casual eateries. Universal offers a variety of dining options to suit different tastes, budgets, and fandoms.
Experiences: Walk through the worlds of your favorite movies and TV shows with thrilling rides, interactive experiences, and live entertainment. Enjoy water-filled fun at Volcano Bay, or relax at Universal CityWalk, a vibrant entertainment complex with restaurants, a movie theatre, mini golf, and more.
Universal Studios Orlando is known for its attention to detail and immersive experiences. However, it may not have the same level of character interaction and magical atmosphere as Disney World.
So which one is right for my family?
Let’s compare Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando based on a few factors that clients usually have questions about from the very beginning:
Cost: Both destinations can be expensive, but overall, Disney World tends to be slightly pricier.
Time Commitment: Disney World is significantly larger, requiring more time to explore. If it’s your first time visiting the Walt Disney Resort, I generally recommend 1 day for each theme park except for Magic Kingdom (you’ll want 2 days there) and a rest day in the middle of your stay. Universal Studios Orlando offers a more compact experience and can generally be conquered in 2 days with an extra day thrown in to enjoy Volcano Bay water park. (Hot tip: This will change once Epic Universe opens in 2025.)
Crowds: Both resorts experience peak crowds during holidays and school breaks. However, Disney World generally has larger crowds overall but in my professional opinion, the size of the Disney World property helps make sure it doesn’t feel as crowded most of the time.
Overall Experience: Disney World is focused on creating a magical atmosphere with beloved characters and timeless stories. Universal Studios Orlando delivers thrilling experiences and immersive worlds based on popular franchises.
Ultimately, the best destination for your family depends on your vacation goals. If you’re seeking a classic, magical experience with a focus on character interactions and family-friendly entertainment, Disney World may be the perfect choice. If you prefer thrilling rides, immersive worlds, and a more modern approach to theme parks, Universal Studios Orlando could be the ideal destination.
